Call for Abstracts

The African Language Teachers Association (ALTA) is a professional organization that works to promote the teaching of, and research in, African languages and cultures. ALTA’s annual conferences provide an avenue for teachers, researchers, students, and other stakeholders in the field to meet and share their experiences and best practices.

The 2023 ALTA conference will take place at Howard University in Washington, DC, on April 14-15, 2023 under the theme, “Navigating Current Challenges in the Teaching and Learning of African Languages”. This year’s conference aims to pursue new pathways for innovative approaches in research and best practices, collaboration among African language educators and institutions, and positioning African languages at the center of the wider field of African Studies. The Conference Organizing Committee invites researchers, educators, practitioners, and program and curriculum developers to submit abstracts for individual papers and panel discussions on topics relevant to the conference theme and the following sub themes:

  • Multimodality and Resource Development
  • Language and Culture
  • African Literature
  • Translation and Interpretation
  • African Linguistics
  • African Languages and Indigenous Knowledge
  • The Role and place of African languages in African Studies
  • The Role of Technology in Instruction
  • Universal Curriculum Design
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Teaching
  • Building Alliances and Leadership
  • Learner Assessment Techniques       
  • Promoting African Languages on Campuses
  • Role of Students and Student Organizations in Advancing African Languages
  • Role of Study Abroad Programs in Advancing African Languages

Presentation Formats

Submit an abstract for one of the following presentation formats. Your abstract may be in English or an African language.

Individual paper: Each paper presentation is allocated a total of 30 minutes: 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Papers constitute original research or practical experience, and may involve an individual or group.

Panel discussion: Each panel discussion is allocated 90 minutes, shared among the panelists. Typically, a panel includes 3-4 panelists, and time is shared equally among members. Discussion time will be determined depending on the number of panelists. Normally, panels examine a single topic extensively and involve the audience in the discussion. Panelists must address an issue related to the theme and/or subthemes of the conference.

Submission of Abstracts

Submit your 250-word abstract electronically by December 15, 2022. You may submit your abstract by creating an account on EasyChair and following submission instructions provided. You will be notified of the status of your abstract by January 15, 2023. The final date for presenters to confirm participation in the conference is February 15, 2023.
